Poly Domes grow healthy
calves and healthy profits
Poly Dome
Calf Nurseries grow calves that are healthier and faster growing than calves
kept in wooden huts, according to research by the University of
Minnesota-Morris. Testing at other universities, and 13 years of farm testing
confirm that Poly Dome grows bigger calves faster.
We are
farmers ourselves and first introduced the plastic poly domes to Northern
Ireland in 1993. We have approximately 35 Domes in use on our own farm (both
the original poly domes and the big foots) and we are completely convinced of
the suitability of these systems for European conditions.
Perhaps the
greatest benefit is in maintaining calf health. Starting the calf off with a
good bed of straw keeps it dry and coupled with this is excellent ventilation
from the adjustable air vent chimney in the centre of the roof. This
ventilation system is a key factor in protecting the calf from pneumonia.
Scours too are much less likely, and since each calf is housed independently in
its own dome, cross contamination is greatly reduced.

How does it work?
Here's how it
works: During the day, the bed pack absorbs sunlight. This stored heat keeps
your calves warm at night. Unlike open huts, temperature change is controlled
over a longer time to reduce stress on your calves. It's perfect even in
variable climates. Snow and wind penetration are stopped, which helps prevent
frozen ears and tails. In fact, after 13 years of farm testing, it was
considered the warmest winter hut on the market.
As stated in Country Folks, May 8, 1989 by Dr. Howard
Larsen, Professor Emeritus Dairy Science Department, University of Wisconsin -
"Properly designed, the calf hutch can be an excellent management tool
which allows the calf to he comfortable, disease free, and grow to her genetic
capacity. Calves will then thrive, not merely survive, and become long-lived,
healthy productive animals in the herd."
